Eight Minutes or Ten? What Tee-Time Intervals Really Do to Pace of Play

An eight-minute interval creates more bookable starts than a ten-minute interval. It can also release groups faster than the course can absorb them. The right answer depends on group size, course flow and what the club means by capacity.

An eight-minute tee-time interval looks efficient. It offers an average of 7.5 group starts per hour, compared with six at ten-minute intervals. On a busy Saturday, that difference is difficult for any club manager or committee to ignore.

But a golf course is not full because the booking screen is full. It is full when groups are moving through its slowest points at a rate the course can sustain.

If the first tee releases golfers faster than an early hole can process them, the club has not removed demand. It has moved the queue from the booking system onto the course. By the third or fourth tee, members see a group waiting in front and conclude that somebody is slow. The original decision may have been made weeks earlier, when the tee sheet was configured.

This does not mean that eight-minute intervals are always wrong, or that ten minutes is a magic answer. It means the interval is an operating decision, not harmless diary formatting.

Why the queue can form when nobody is slow

The R&A Pace of Play Manual uses a useful simplified example. Three-balls begin on two par fours, each with an allotted playing time of 12 minutes, followed by a par three allotted nine minutes. Groups start every eight minutes.

Every group plays each hole within the expected time. Nobody loses a ball. Nobody has a long ruling. Yet the second group waits for one minute on the third tee, the third waits for two, and the delay continues to build. When the same example uses ten-minute starting intervals, the third-tee delay does not arise.

The important point is not that every par three takes nine minutes. Real rounds have far more variation. The point is that a connected series of holes behaves like a queueing system. When groups arrive at a bottleneck faster than it can clear them, waiting is structural.

Small variations then make the pattern less stable. A difficult hole location, a brief ball search or one late departure may be absorbed when there is space between groups. On a course already operating without a margin, the same event is passed backwards from group to group.

That is why a round can feel slow even while most golfers are playing sensibly. They are spending their time waiting rather than playing.

Eight versus ten is the wrong question on its own

The R&A recommends starting with at least eight minutes for two-balls and at least ten minutes for three-balls. For four-balls, it says clubs should consider 11 or 12 minutes. It also offers a practical guide: the starting interval should not be shorter than the time required to play the quickest hole, particularly when that hole comes early.

Those figures are guidance, not a universal timetable.

An eight-minute interval may work well for two-balls on a straightforward course at a quiet time. Ten minutes may be inadequate for four-balls on a difficult layout with an early bottleneck. A predominantly walking members’ club, a resort using buggies, a links course exposed to wind and a compact parkland course are not running the same operation.

The interval also needs to reflect the field:

  • Two-balls can usually move and clear playing areas more quickly than four-balls.
  • Stableford, stroke play, match play and social golf create different patterns.
  • Mixed group sizes can produce repeated catching and waiting; the safest planning assumption may need to reflect the largest common group.
  • An unfamiliar visitor field may need more time for routing and course decisions than regular members.
  • Cart-path restrictions, weather and temporary course works can change flow from one day to the next.

The sensible question is therefore not, “Is eight or ten minutes correct?” It is, “What interval produces reliable flow for this group mix, on this course, under these conditions?”

Bookable capacity is not always usable capacity

The strongest argument for short intervals is access. Members want to play. Visitors create income. Summer daylight is finite, especially at the shoulders of the season. Removing starts from a popular morning block can feel like solving slow play by telling golfers to stay at home.

That objection is legitimate.

Moving from an eight-minute pattern to a ten-minute pattern reduces theoretical starts from 7.5 to six groups per hour. If every slot would otherwise be occupied, the immediate loss is real. A club should not promise that wider intervals will automatically replace that revenue or satisfy everybody.

However, starts per hour measure only what leaves the first tee. They do not show:

  • whether departures remain on time later in the day;
  • how many groups finish within the club’s published time par;
  • whether twilight golfers complete their rounds;
  • how much time staff spend managing queues and complaints;
  • whether golfers return after an unpleasant five-hour experience; or
  • whether booked four-balls actually contain four players.

A club may discover that it has a flow problem and an allocation problem at the same time. No-shows, late cancellations, partially filled groups and booking rules that favour a small number of frequent players can waste access without appearing in the interval calculation.

The Netherlands Golf Federation’s start-time management guidance treats these as connected issues. It discusses intervals alongside fair allocation, booking limits, no-shows, group size, demand by time of day and the use of quieter periods. That is a more useful frame than simply squeezing another line onto the tee sheet.

Europe does not have one pattern of demand

The trade-off changes across Europe. A Nordic club may have long playing days in June but a compressed shoulder season. A southern resort may need to manage heat, guest expectations and buggy use. A traditional club in Great Britain or Ireland may operate without formal bookings, but it still has an interval: the space in its first-tee queue.

Three-ball competition fields are common in some places; fourball social play dominates elsewhere. Nine-hole demand and the feasibility of two-tee starts also vary. Copying a successful neighbour can therefore mislead: even nearby courses may have different early-hole capacity, transfers, group mixes and demand peaks.

The first bottleneck deserves more attention than the final round time

A whole-round average tells a club that a problem exists. It rarely tells the club where it begins.

Suppose the average round is 4 hours 25 minutes. That number cannot distinguish between a ten-minute delay forming on the third tee and several smaller delays spread across the course. The remedies would be different.

The R&A’s appendices recommend building a realistic time par from the course itself. Relevant factors include group size, hole length, hole difficulty and the walking distance from green to the next tee. The guidance is deliberately clear that there is no single formula.

For interval decisions, the most useful information is often:

  • scheduled and actual departure time;
  • arrival and departure time at selected early checkpoints;
  • the gap between consecutive groups at those points;
  • playing time and waiting time by hole;
  • group size and format;
  • finish time and completion within time par; and
  • weather, course setup and restrictions on the measured day.

The early checkpoints matter because congestion has a memory. Once a queue has formed, the back nine may only reveal the result of an earlier constraint.

Run a trial that can actually teach you something

A club does not need a complex analytics project before changing anything. It does need a trial that separates evidence from impressions.

Start with a defined question, such as: “Would ten-minute intervals improve flow for fourballs during the Saturday morning peak compared with our current eight-minute pattern?”

Then:

  1. Choose comparable blocks. Avoid comparing a calm members’ day with a visitor event in heavy rain.
  2. Hold other variables visible. Record group size, format, course setup, weather and buggy restrictions rather than pretending they do not matter.
  3. Measure the first six holes properly. Record actual departures and two or three checkpoints before the queue becomes normalised.
  4. Include the golfer’s experience. A short post-round question about waiting can reveal a difference that finish time alone misses.
  5. Measure access as well as speed. Track filled player places, no-shows, completion, revenue per available course hour and later-start reliability.
  6. Repeat the test. One perfect or disastrous day is not a policy.

It may also be worth trialling a starter’s gap: an intentionally empty time after a defined number of groups. The R&A gives an example of a ten-minute gap after every tenth group, but again, that is an illustration rather than a prescription. A gap sacrifices visible inventory and creates recovery space for normal variation. Whether it is worthwhile depends on where delays form and how heavily the tee sheet is used.

Wider intervals are not the only access tool

If a trial shows that the current interval is too narrow, the answer need not be a simple reduction in playing opportunity.

A club can also examine better filling of part-booked groups, release deadlines and waiting lists, fair limits on peak advance bookings, nine-hole starts, two-tee waves for suitable competitions, different intervals by group size or time, and protected maintenance windows.

Each option has trade-offs. Variable intervals are harder to explain, and badly sized two-tee waves can create a queue at the turn. The point is to treat capacity as a system rather than asking one interval to solve every demand problem.

The honest conclusion

Short intervals are not automatically bad. Wider intervals are not automatically efficient. Eight minutes may suit small groups on an uncongested course; ten may still be too tight for fourballs meeting an early bottleneck.

The club should also continue to teach Ready Golf, set realistic expectations and help genuinely slow groups. Course management does not remove player responsibility.

But asking golfers to hurry cannot repair a timetable that sends them into a queue.

The useful change is not “move from eight to ten” as a matter of belief. Measure how the course fills, find the first recurring wait, test an alternative and choose the best combination of access, flow and experience.

That is real capacity: not the maximum number of names the booking system can display, but the number of golfers the course can serve well.
