Brown grass creates an immediate reaction. Green looks cared for. Brown looks neglected.
That judgement is sometimes correct. Turf can lose cover, roots can weaken and a playing surface can fail. But colour alone does not tell us which of those things has happened. In dry conditions, some turf enters dormancy and loses green colour as a survival response. It may still have a viable crown and root system and recover when moisture and suitable growing conditions return.
The sensible message is not “brown is always good”. It is that the club should judge turf by more than colour.
Colour is visible; playing quality is measurable
A golfer can assess colour from the car park. The course team needs a broader picture.
Useful questions include:
- Is there continuous turf cover, or are bare areas developing?
- Is the surface firm and playable rather than hard and unsafe?
- Does the ball react consistently?
- Are putting surfaces smooth and true?
- Are roots, crowns and growing points still viable?
- Is water reaching the areas the club has chosen to protect?
- How quickly does the turf recover after stress and traffic?
Brown rough can frame a fairway beautifully and suit the character of a links course. Brown patches on a putting green caused by a failed sprinkler are a different matter. A firm fairway that rewards a running shot can be excellent. A hydrophobic patch that rejects water and loses grass cover is not made sustainable by calling it “natural”.
The distinction is condition, not colour.
Dormant does not mean dead
The British and International Golf Greenkeepers Association has explained the basic point clearly: grass may become dormant during drought, reducing activity until moisture returns. Whether it recovers well depends on the grass species, the severity and duration of stress, soil conditions and what happens during recovery.
This is why clubs should avoid two equally poor statements:
- “The grass is brown, so the course is dying.”
- “The grass is brown, so everything is fine.”
Neither conclusion follows from appearance alone.
Cool-season grasses do not all respond to drought in the same way. STERF’s fairway research has examined differences in drought resistance among species and cultivars. A fescue-dominant links, a ryegrass parkland course and a site with substantial annual meadow-grass populations will not have identical water needs or recovery patterns.
Soil and construction matter too. A sandy rootzone drains and dries differently from heavy clay. Shade, wind exposure, compaction, thatch and rooting depth change how much usable water remains. The right standard has to start with the course that actually exists.
A completely green course can hide poor decisions
Watering everything to maintain one shade of green may look reassuring, but it can create other problems.
The R&A’s water guidance warns that over-irrigation can soften playing surfaces, encourage organic matter and favour grass species that demand more inputs. It also increases pressure on water, energy and maintenance budgets.
The aim is not the least water possible. Turf needs enough water to remain functional and to meet the course standard. The aim is to apply the right amount in the right places, supported by measurement and observation.
That usually requires priorities. Greens, tees and high-traffic landing areas may receive more protection than out-of-play rough. Hand watering may target dry spots that a full irrigation cycle would miss. Some fairways may be allowed to change colour while the team protects turf cover and recovery potential.
At a Mediterranean resort, the boundary may be deliberately sharp between irrigated playing corridors and dry native landscape. At a traditional British or Irish links, seasonal fescue colour may be part of the course’s character. At an inland parkland club, members may reasonably expect more retained colour because the course has historically promised and resourced that presentation.
Sustainability does not erase the club’s promise. It requires the club to make that promise realistic.
Separate the course standard into parts
“The course should be green” is an easy standard to state and a poor one to manage.
A better summer standard describes several things separately:
- turf survival: acceptable cover, rooting and recovery;
- playing performance: firmness, smoothness, trueness and consistency;
- presentation: the intended colour and visual definition for each area;
- resource limits: available water, labour, energy and budget;
- intervention points: the conditions that trigger extra watering, traffic control or repair.
These measures allow an honest conversation. The fairways may be lighter in colour while the ball still sits well and runs consistently. One shaded green may need different treatment from the other seventeen. A dry spell may be within the plan until turf cover begins to fall below the club’s threshold.
Without such thresholds, “sustainable” can become a word used after the course has already deteriorated.
The strongest objection is fair
Members have paid for a golf course, not an agronomy lecture.
If irrigation coverage is poor, dry patch is left untreated, bare turf appears repeatedly or surfaces become inconsistent, the club should not answer every complaint with climate and sustainability. Those factors may explain the challenge. They do not prove the response was good.
A credible club acknowledges failures plainly:
“The dry area on the fifth fairway is not an intended presentation choice. We found an irrigation fault on Tuesday, have repaired it and are hand watering the affected area. Recovery will take time.”
That message builds more trust than describing every brown area as environmental progress.
The opposite is also true. A member preference for uninterrupted emerald colour does not, by itself, justify water and input use that the site cannot support. The R&A’s sustainable agronomy programme emphasises resilient turf, efficient resource use and course-specific decision-making. A board must decide what standard is affordable and defensible over several seasons, not only before Saturday’s competition.
Explain what the course team is protecting
Generic messages such as “due to the weather” are not very informative. A useful summer update tells golfers:
- what conditions the course has experienced;
- which areas are being prioritised;
- what the team is monitoring;
- what change would trigger further action; and
- what recovery is expected.
For example:
“Fairways are being allowed to lose some colour while we protect turf cover on greens, tees and high-traffic landing areas. The team is checking moisture and local dry spots daily. We will add targeted irrigation where cover or recovery is at risk. Playing surfaces remain firm and consistent, although ball run will be greater than in spring.”
That is specific without pretending that a short update can replace the course manager’s judgement.
Pictures help when they are used honestly. Show the healthy crown or root development, the moisture reading or the difference between an intentionally dry rough and a failed turf area. Avoid heavily edited green photographs that contradict what members see on the course.
Build a small summer dashboard
The board does not need every agronomic measurement. It does need enough evidence to distinguish a plan from a hope.
A weekly summer review could include:
- recent rainfall and irrigation use;
- soil-moisture trends at representative greens and fairways;
- turf-cover or visual-quality observations;
- firmness and putting-performance measures where relevant;
- active irrigation faults and local dry spots;
- traffic damage and areas under recovery; and
- player feedback grouped by location and condition.
Local trends are more useful than comparing colour with another club on social media. They show whether the course is holding its standard, whether interventions are working and what should change before the next dry period.
Brown can be part of a good course
A golf course is a living landscape, not a painted surface.
Natural summer colour can reflect resilient grasses, firmer playing conditions and a sensible allocation of water. It can also reveal weak irrigation, unsuitable species or standards that were never properly funded. The club’s job is to know which is which.
Do not defend brown because it is brown. Defend a measured course standard: viable turf, consistent golf, clear priorities and a credible recovery plan.
When those things are present, green colour becomes one characteristic of the course rather than the entire definition of quality.
