Who Actually Uses Digital Scorecards? The Honest Answer Is More Complicated

It is tempting to divide golfers into young app users and older paper users. Public European evidence does not support such a neat answer. Clubs need to distinguish scorekeeping from score submission—and measure the barriers that matter.

Ask around a golf club and somebody will offer a confident answer.

Young golfers use the phone. Older golfers want paper. Men like statistics. Women prefer simplicity. Scandinavians will adopt anything digital. Golfers in more traditional markets will resist it.

These claims sound plausible because each of us can remember a few people who fit them. They are not a reliable description of European golf.

The honest answer is that public data on digital scorecard use is surprisingly thin. National golf unions publish total scores, app downloads and participation figures, but rarely show digital scoring by age, gender and country using comparable definitions.

That gap is useful. It forces clubs to ask a better question: not “Which demographic likes technology?” but “Which golfers can complete this task easily in this situation?”

First, define “uses a digital scorecard”

This phrase can describe several different behaviours:

  • entering every hole in a phone during the round;
  • keeping one digital card for an entire group;
  • recording on paper and submitting the total through an app afterwards;
  • entering a card on a clubhouse terminal or website;
  • using electronic scoring in a formal competition; or
  • using an app for handicap, booking and course information but not for live scoring.

A download does not prove that a golfer records scores on the course. A score submitted through an app does not prove that the phone replaced paper during play. One group may create a single digital card for four players, while another has four people tapping after every hole.

Unless those actions are separated, an “adoption rate” can answer the wrong question.

What the public golf data does tell us

England Golf reported in March 2024 that the MyEG app had been downloaded by more than 400,000 people and that more than 21% of scores in 2023 were registered through the app. It also reported a 20% increase in app usage by girls and women and said that more than 12,000 users responded to a product survey.

Those are meaningful signs of use. They do not tell us the age distribution, the proportion of each gender using the app, how often each person used it or whether the phone was used during the round.

England Golf later reported 10,213,894 WHS scores in 2024, an increase of 8.63% on 2023. The number of scores submitted by males rose by 754,009 and the number submitted by females by 57,703. Again, these are score totals, not a comparison of digital preference. More scores from men may simply reflect the much larger number of registered male golfers and different playing frequency.

Denmark illustrates another problem: the digital route itself changes. Dansk Golf Union introduced a digital membership card, moved national handicap information into its Mit Golf app and added direct score-submission options. Its own FAQ has also acknowledged scorecard freezes when players move between the GolfBox scoring flow and another course-guide app.

That is not a demographic issue. It is a workflow issue. A keen app user can abandon digital scoring if switching screens loses the card, while a supposedly “non-digital” golfer may use it happily when one clear process works every time.

Age matters, but not in the lazy way

General European data confirms an age gap in digital skills. Eurostat estimated that in 2023, 70% of people aged 16–24 and 70% of those aged 25–34 had at least basic digital skills, compared with 28% of people aged 65–74.

That is relevant context. It is not a digital golf scorecard survey.

The same Eurostat research shows why clubs should avoid translating “lower average skill” into “does not use a smartphone”. In 2024, 93% of people aged 16–74 in the EU had used the internet during the previous three months. Among internet users aged 65–74 in 2023, 57% used online banking. Many older Europeans complete digital tasks involving far greater consequences than recording a six on a par four.

Age can affect confidence, eyesight, dexterity and familiarity with app conventions. It can also work in the opposite direction. An older member who plays three times a week may know the club’s scoring process better than a 25-year-old visitor. A younger golfer may carry a phone throughout the round but see no reason to maintain an official handicap.

Age is a useful design consideration. It is a poor verdict on an individual.

Gender totals can be badly misleading

The R&A and EGA’s 2024 European participation estimates recorded approximately 4.72 million registered golfers: 3.23 million men, 1.07 million women and 421,000 juniors.

With that starting population, raw digital-use totals are likely to show more men even if men and women adopt a scorecard at exactly the same rate. A fair comparison needs a denominator, such as active digital scorers as a percentage of eligible golfers in each group, and ideally it should account for rounds played.

The limited evidence does not justify saying that one gender inherently prefers digital scoring. England Golf’s reported rise in use among girls and women is encouraging, but a percentage increase does not reveal the starting level or the final share.

Eurostat also shows that age and gender interact. In younger adult groups, women were slightly more likely than men to have at least basic digital skills; among older groups, men had higher rates, with a wider gap at ages 65–74. A single “male versus female” label hides that structure—and still does not measure golf scoring.

If a club finds a gender gap, it should first check membership composition, playing frequency, competition entry, age mix and whether the product was tested with both women and men. Preference should be the conclusion after investigation, not the explanation before it.

Country differences are real, but country is not the cause

Digital conditions vary substantially across Europe. In Eurostat’s 2023 measure, at least basic digital skills ranged from 83% in the Netherlands and 82% in Finland to 28% in Romania and 36% in Bulgaria. Denmark stood at 70%.

That makes a single European rollout unrealistic. It does not mean every Dutch golfer wants phone scoring or every Romanian golfer needs paper.

Country-level use can be shaped by:

  • whether the national union provides one recognised app;
  • whether handicap, booking and competition scoring share a login;
  • whether the digital membership card already brings golfers into the app;
  • mobile coverage on the course;
  • language and accessibility;
  • trust in self-submitted general-play scores;
  • the role of club competitions in handicap culture; and
  • whether staff and volunteers actively support the process.

In one country, entering scores on a phone may feel like the normal final step in a national digital journey. In another, the club may be asking members to install a separate scoring product that does not connect cleanly with the booking system they already use.

That is not cultural resistance in the abstract. It is a different value exchange.

The most useful user groups are behavioural

For club operations, the following groups are often more informative than age or gender:

The live scorer enters each hole during the round and values speed, large tap targets and an offline-safe card.

The group scorer is willing to manage all players on one device. This can produce excellent adoption with fewer phones in use, but the transfer and certification process must be clear.

The after-round submitter prefers paper during play but will use a phone or terminal to return the score. This golfer is digitally active even though the paper card remains.

The competition-only user accepts electronic scoring when the club provides a defined event workflow but does not want another daily golf app.

The assisted user can complete the process after a short demonstration, a saved login or help from a playing partner.

The paper loyalist may have practical, social or personal reasons to keep the card. The club should understand the cost of supporting that route before removing it, not dismiss the person as anti-technology.

These categories lead directly to product and service decisions. “Members over 65” does not.

How a club can find its real answer

Start with anonymous operational measures:

  1. How many digital cards are started and completed?
  2. At which screen or hole are they abandoned?
  3. How often does a card need staff correction?
  4. Which device, app version or connection errors occur?
  5. Are people scoring one player or a whole group?
  6. Does completion differ between competitions, general play and visitors?

Then ask a short, voluntary question at the point of use. Age bands may help; exact dates of birth usually do not. Gender should be optional and include a “prefer not to say” choice. Ask about the barrier as well as the person: small text, forgotten password, poor signal, battery concern, unclear certification or simply a preference to keep the phone in the bag.

Under the GDPR, the club should define why personal data is needed, explain the purpose and collect only what is necessary. Truly anonymous operational data is preferable where it can answer the question.

Most importantly, compare rates rather than totals. Ten highly active members can generate more digital cards than 50 occasional players. That does not make their demographic ten times more enthusiastic.

Digital should be easy, not compulsory by accident

The Rules of Golf allow a committee-approved electronic scorecard, and Dansk Golf Union confirms that electronic cards can replace paper in competitions when player and marker certification requirements are satisfied.

That makes digital scoring legitimate. It does not make every implementation inclusive.

A sensible transition offers a clear primary digital path plus a workable fallback. It includes large text, high contrast, simple recovery from interruption, clear marker approval, minimal login friction and staff who can demonstrate the process without making a member feel foolish.

Paper may remain the best backup for a flat battery, damaged phone, lost connection or player who cannot use the digital route. Keeping that backup is not a failure of modernisation. Requiring staff to re-enter hundreds of avoidable paper cards probably is.

The honest conclusion

Younger golfers are more likely, on average, to have stronger general digital skills. European countries have different digital baselines. The registered golf population is not evenly divided by gender. All of that matters.

None of it proves who will use a digital scorecard at a particular club.

The strongest predictor is often much less dramatic: does the tool solve a task the golfer recognises, in a process that works reliably, without creating more interruption than the paper it replaces?

Clubs that measure that question will learn more than clubs that simply assume age will solve the adoption problem.
